A photo identification card is available to an Alberta Resident who does not or cannot hold a valid Alberta operator’s license and is over the age of 12. The card is clearly marked for identification purposes only and does not entitle the person to operate a motor vehicle under any circumstances. To obtain an identification card, the individual must provide sufficient and acceptable identification https://www.alberta.ca/get-id-card.aspx . All identification must be valid (not expired where applicable) and original unless otherwise stated.

Proof of Canadian Legal Presence such as an original Canadian Birth Certificate, Canadian Passport, Canadian Citizenship Card or Certificate, Permanent Resident card, Confirmation of Permanent Resident Document, or out of country Passport with valid Work/Student/and in some circumstances Visitor Permit.
If the person applying is under the age of 18 and is not self-supporting or married(proof is required) a parent or guardian with their Alberta driver’s license (or other Identification) must be present at time of receiving ID Card.

If the person applying is over the age of 18, they must show proof of Alberta residency. Proof of Alberta residency must have the applicants name as shown on identification and supporting documents and their current mailing address. These documents must be the originals issued within the last 90 days (Exceptions: physical utility statements may be electronic; Letter Confirming employment must be on Company Letterhead and are only valid for 14 days). Some examples that may be accepted are rental agreement, utility bill, pay stub, cellphone bill, government letter, enrollment verification report from an educational facility, credit card statement, or other financial type documents.

The cost for an Alberta Identification Card is $49.00 for 5 years and this cost is prorated for individuals who do not qualify for a 5 year term.
